Dear Juno,
Giving the baby to Vanessa was the best decision, because you made it. You considered your future as well as the baby’s future, your family’s future and Vanessa’s future.
My name is Shelby. I am a 17 year old high school senior. I plan to go to college and travel the world in my mother’s footsteps. Having a baby at my age and choosing to keep it would be the worst decision for me. If I were to become pregnant, I am not scared to admit that I would abort the child. I know in my heart that I would not be strong enough to give away a baby for which I carried and loved for 9 months. I strongly respect all teen mothers who have the will to do that, but unfortunately, I am not one of them. I am scared that by having the child and choosing the keep him or her I will not be able to provide stability for myself or my child. In my situation, my parents have three other children to provide for and send to college. My parents love me and would not disown me or throw me on the streets but my life as a teenager would be over. They would not be able to also provide for my baby and therefore at 17 years old, I would have to.
I am sending you this letter now because accidents happen. Nothing is set in stone and if I do become pregnant as a teenager I hope to not become blind-sided by, all of the “pro life” campaign and remember what is best for me. I believe that is what it ultimately comes down to; what is best for you? What was best for you was to give the baby to Vanessa. It gave you the chance to return to being a teenager and continuing any future plans at which you had, as well as bringing joy to a woman who could not fill a hole in her heart on her own. What would be best for me would be to abort the child because I know I would not be able to hand over a precious creature for which I am unable to provide for.
I hope that teenagers across the nation realize that they have a choice and that their life does not have to end because they have become pregnant. It is a very scary and complicated topic, I understand. However, if you believe that you are mature enough to have sex then I believe you must also be mature enough make the best decision for you in case of an accident.
Sincerely,
Shelby
